Russia Denies Involvement In Assassination Attempt

Moscow, April 12 (RFE/RL) - Colonel Valentine Astafyiev of the Russian command in Chechnya denies Russian forces were involved in an assassination attempt on Separatist Military Leader Aslan Maskhadov.

Maskhadov escaped a powerful explosion earlier this week in the village of Tsatsan Yurt, 50 kilometers south of Grozny.

Interfax quotes Astafyiev as saying today in Grozny that the attempt to kill Maskhadov was a result of conflicts among the Chechen separatist leadership.

Chechen separatist spokesman, Movladi Udugov, told RFE/RL that Russian troops were involved in the assassination attempt.
