Campaign Begins Today in Romania for Mayors and Local Councils


Bucharest, April 19 (RFE/RL) - Romanians begin today a 45-day campaign leading to June 2 elections for mayors and local councils.

The mayoral race in the capital Bucharest is attracting international attention, with former world tennis champion Ilie Nastase running for mayor as the candidate of the governing Party of Social Democracy in Romania. He is opposed by trade union leader Victor Ciorbea,for the Democratic Convention in Romania, by Romanian Ambassador to France Anton Vatasescu for the Democrat Party, and other candidates.

Voters also will decide a number of local mayorships, and will choose members of local and regional councils who decide administrative policies, local budgets, and municipal contracts, among other matters.
