Japan Defense Chief Hold Talks With Grachev

Moscow, April 29 (RFE/RL) - The head of Japan's national defense agency, Hideo Usui, held talks in Moscow today with Russian Defense Minister Pavel Grachev.

Our correspondent quotes Russian defense ministry officials as saying Grachev and Usui do not plan to sign any official treaty or agreement. Usui, who is the first Japanese defense chief to visit Russia in modern times, said earlier that he intended to "boost Russian-Japanese ties" and raise "the level of trust" between the two countries.

Usui will end his three-day visit today after talks with Russian Foreign Minister Yevgeny Primakov.
