Croatia Celebrates Fifth Anniversary of Independence

Zagreb, June 25 (RFE/RL) -- Croatia today celebrates the fifth anniversary of its independence from the former Yugoslavia with a ceremony in its parliament, the Sabor.

Croatia split from Yugoslavia on June 25, 1991 after the parliament had passed a "declaration of sovereignty and independence."

In a speech today, parliamentary speaker Vlatko Pavletic described the declaration of independence as an "historic step." He also said that the army, the police and parliament were "the pillars upon which Croatian security had rested during the past five years."
