Sochi, August 7 (RFE/RL)-- Renewed diplomatic efforts are underway to try to settle the dispute between Georgia and its breakaway region of Abkhazia.
The efforts are being led by Lorenz Kerr, deputy U.S. ambassador to Georgia.
Kerr arrived in Sukhumi, the regional capital of Abkhazia, yesterday and is due to meet Abkhazian officials for talks today.
Kerr characterized the visit as a fact-finding mission designed to help find a solution to the conflict.
The United States has expressed concern that the peace process had not been moving forward and has said it is ready to help mediate between the two sides.
