Tallinn, 16 August 1996 (RFE/RL) -- Child prostitution has become a serious problem in Estonia, a top official in the Baltic country said today.
"The situation with the sexual exploitation of children is ... getting worse day by day," Jaan Ruutman, a social affairs ministry chancellor, told the Baltic News Service.
He estimated that about 1,000 Estonian children earn their living through prostitution or are forced to engage in it.
A four-member team from the Estonian Social Affairs Ministry and police are due to travel to Stockholm to attend a world conference on the sexual harassment of children at the end of this month.
