Bosnia: U.S. Says No Secession In Bosnia After Election

Washington, 10 September 1996 (RFE/RL) - Any attempt to promote secession in Bosnia after this week's election will be met with a stern rebuff by the United States, says the U.S. State Department.

State Department spokesman Nicholas Burns said yesterday that the elections were explicitly designed to protect the continuity of the state of Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Any candidate running for office in this election campaign is committing himself or herself to that purpose, he said.

Any party that tried to promote secession after the election would be met "by a stiff rebuff not only from inside the country, but from outside, led by the United States," he said.
