Moscow, 12 September 1996 (RFE/RL) -- The special United Nations envoy on the Tajikistan conflict, German diplomat Gerd Merrem, is holding talks in Moscow with Russia's Foreign Minister Yevgeny Primakov.
Merrem and Primakov have been trying to arrange a meeting in Moscow between Tajikistan's President Imomoli Rakhmonov and the top Tajik opposition leader Said Abdullo Nuri.
Interfax news agency yesterday said Merrem is expected to remain in Moscow for several more days and meet other top officials of the Foreign Ministry, as well as officials of the Defense Ministry and Federal Border Service.
Russian officials have also held talks in Kabul on setting up a security zone along the Tajikistan-Afghanistan border.
