Armenia: Women's Organization Criticizes The West For Election Comments

Yerevan, 7 October 1996 (RFE/RL) -- An Armenian pro-government women's organization over the weekend criticized the West for pursuing what it says is a "democratic double-standard."

The organization, known as "Shamiram," published a communique in Yerevan in which it takes the West, and particularly the United States, to task for criticizing election results in Armenia.

The organization says Armenia, as Russia's ally, stands as a bulwark against the complete hegemony of the West in the region, including Azerbaijan and its vast oil reserves.

It says that by criticizing the election results, the West aims to destabilize Armenia in order to satisfy Azerbaijan's demands on Nagorno-Karabakh and gain control of the oil.

Our correspondent in Yerevan says the communique was not published in the official government newspaper. But he says such a statement would not have been published in other newspapers without official government sanction.
