Kyrgyzstan: CIS Defense Ministers May Soon Meet On Afghan Crisis

Bishkek, 8 October 1996 (RFE/RL) -- Kyrgyzstan's President, Askar Akayev, says a special meeting of Commonwealth of Independent States defense ministers will be held soon to discuss developments in Afghanistan.

Akayev made the comment yesterday as he reviewed the results of last week's Central Asia-Russia summit on Afghanistan. At the summit, Central Asian and Russian leaders said they would take appropriate actions to defend their interests if Taliban forces threatened Central Asia.

Akayev also said Kyrgyzstan is prepared to receive Afghan and ethnic Tajik refugees fleeing Afghanistan.
