Ukraine: Working Groups Lay Groundwork for Ukraine-U.S. Commission

Washington, 1 November 1996 (RFE/RL) -- Officials of the Ukrainian and U.S. governments will meet in Washington next week to continue laying the groundwork for the first meeting of the Ukrainian-American cooperation commission expected sometime next spring.

A spokesman for U.S. Vice President Al Gore, who is to co-chair the commission along with Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma, said that lower level officials from Kyiv and Washington will be meeting in two working groups to prepare the structure of the commission.

The United States and Ukraine agreed to form the commission earlier this year, patterning it on similar commissions Washington has with Russia, South Africa and some other nations. They are designed to expedite economic, scientific and governmental cooperation between the two countries.
