Kyrgyzstan: Assembly Elects New Chairman

Bishkek, 15 November 1996 (RFE/RL) - Kyrgyzstan's Legislative Assembly has elected Usup Mukambaev as its new chairman. Among the ten deputies nominated for the post was former chairman Mukar Cholponbaev.

Choloponbaev refused to accept nomination. He resigned this week, after the Constitutional Court ruled his selection as chairman in March, 1996, was invalid, because a quorum was not present at the time of the vote.

The new chairman, Mukambaev is a 55-year-old lawyer who worked for the Justice Ministry before being fired in 1993. He was unemployed for two years, before his election as a deputy in 1995.
