Bulgaria: Zhelev Appeals For Economic Aid

Sofia, 15 November 1996 (RFE/RL) - Bulgaria's outgoing President Zhelyu Zhelev has appealed to leading Western industrial powers and Russia to help his country out of its economic crisis.

Zhelev, who did not run for re-election this month, today called on the ambassadors of the United States, Britain, Germany, France, Italy and Russia to help in, what he called, the last desperate efforts to save the country's reforms.

Thomas O'Sullivan, head of the European Union (EU) delegation to Sofia, told Zhelev that the EU is ready to help, but that aid would be linked to tighter financial discipline.
