Czech Republic: Havel Cancels Ukraine Trip Because Of Pneumonia




Prague, 18 November 1996 (RFE/RL) - Czech President Vaclav Havel is reported to be suffering from pneumonia and has cancelled a planned trip to Ukraine.

Presidential spokesman Ladislav Spacek said, in a statement, that Havel has not been hospitalized, but is under medical supervision and has been ordered to rest in bed.

Spacek said as a result all presidential appointments have been cancelled for the next two weeks, including a trip to Ukraine.

Havel was due to leave for a three-day visit to Ukraine tomorrow, where he was to meet President Leonid Kuchma. It would have been the first state visit by Havel to Ukraine.

Spacek said the visit would go ahead at a future date to be determined.
