Belarus: Border Police Detain Publisher, Impound Newspapers

Minsk, 22 November 1996 (RFE/RL) - Representatives of an independent Belarusian newspaper publisher say police have detained him for the second time in a week.

Employees of the "Svoboda" newspaper told our correspondent in Minsk that publisher Pavel Zhuk was detained after crossing the border from Lithuania with 300,000 copies of newspapers critical of President Alyaksandr Lukashenka.

Zhuk is the publisher of four independent newspapers which are all published in Lithuiania.

Belarusian border guards last Saturday confiscated 200,000 copies of one of his newspapers. Svoboda employees say Zhuk is being detained near the border crossing and is under investigation on possible charges of publishing anti-state propaganda.
