Russia: Cardiologists Say Yeltsin Guaranteed Active Life

Moscow, 22 November 1996 (RFE/RL) - Chief Kremlin doctor Sergei Mironov says Russian President Boris Yeltsin's heart operation has guaranteed him a fully active life into the next century.

Mironov told a news conference in Moscow today that it was not only his opinion, but the opinion of other leading cardiologists that the operation had insured Yeltsin an active life for the next 10 to 12 years.

Yeltsin, who underwent heart surgery two weeks ago, moved today from the Kremlin hospital to the Barvikha sanitorium outside Moscow.

Mironov said in four weeks time, Yeltsin will be able to travel and fly across time zones. He said Yeltsin will remain at the Barvikha sanitorium for two to three weeks, and towards December 20, he will return to work.

Mironov said Yeltsin is already working on documents for four to six hours a day, and is steadily expanding his physical activities. He said the five heart bypasses performed on Yeltsin are working normally.

Mironov denied reports that the president's new plane was equipped with a special operating room, saying it has only basic, necessary medical facilities.
