Russia: Chernomyrdin To Attend Opening Of Gas Line In Poland Today

Warsaw, 28 November 1996 (RFE/RL) - Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin is scheduled to make a brief visit to Poland today to attend the opening of a new gas pipeline.

Polish Foreign Minister Dariusz Rosati said Chernomyrdin would stop for a few hours in Poznan, western Poland, to take part in a ceremony marking the opening of the Yamal Peninsula gas line linking Russia, Poland and Germany.

Talks between Chernomyrdin and Polish Prime Minister Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz are also expected. Our correspondent says the two men may sign an agreement on the return of undesirable aliens. Such an agreement was set as a pre-condition to a pact on visa-free travel agreed during a visit by Cimoszewicz to Moscow earlier this month.

Chernomyrdin will be coming to Poland from Bonn, where he was scheduled to stop following the conclusion of his visit to France this week. Chernomyrdin yesterday spoke to French businessmen and visited the Renault auto company. Talks with senior French officials were held earlier.
