Czech Republic: Havel Taken Out Of Intensive Care

Prague, 23 December 1996 (RFE/RL) -- Czech President Vaclav Havel, who underwent surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his lung earlier this month, was released from the intensive care unit but will remain in a Prague hospital over Christmas.

Havel's doctor, Pavel Pafko, said the Czech President remains weak and faces a "long and difficult recovery." Havel had half his right lung removed during the operation. Following the surgery, he contracted pneumonia. He was placed on a respirator until last weekend.
