Belarus: Opposition Leader Meets Family In Warsaw

Warsaw, 2 January 1997 (RFE/RL) - Belarusian opposition leader Zyanon Paznyak has been celebrating the holidays with his family in Warsaw.

Paznyak has spent most of his time in the United States since being granted political asylum by Washington last summer. A leader of the opposition Belarus Popular Front, Paznyak was out of the country last year when authorities issued orders for his arrest.

Our Warsaw correspondent quotes Paznyak yesterday as saying he plans to remain in Poland for several weeks, meeting Polish politicians to discuss "how to help Belarus democracy in its fight against a totalitarian system." He also called for Eastern Europe to take "joint action" on what he called Belarus' "dictatorship."

Paznyak said he also hopes to travel to Lithuania and Ukraine.
