Czech Republic: Polish Prime Minister Visits Today

Prague, 9 January 1997 (RFE/RL) - Polish Prime Minister Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz is scheduled to arrive in Prague today at the start of a two-day visit.

The CTK news agency reports that Cimoszewicz is expected to meet with Czech Prime Minister Vaclav Klaus, Foreign Minister Josef Zieleniec, and Czech parliament chairman and opposition leader Milos Zeman.

No official announcement has been made regarding the expected content of talks during the visit, Cimoszewicz's first official trip to the neighboring Czech Republic as Poland's Prime Minister. But CTK reports that the two sides are expected to focus on bilateral economic and political relations, as well as possible future membership in the European Union and the NATO military alliance.

Most observers expect the two countries to be among a first group of states selected by NATO to begin accession talks later this year.
