Russia: Lebed Needs Ticket To Inauguration

Washington, 16 January 1997 (RFE/RL) - U.S. White House spokesman Michael McCurry says former Russian National Security Secretary Aleksandr Lebed will need a ticket if he wants to attend U.S. President Bill Clinton's inauguration.

McCurry was responding to a question regarding reports from Russia that quoted Lebed as saying he was invited to attend the inauguration ceremony on Monday.

Lebed is currently on a trip to Germany.

McCurry said it is the custom and tradition that the United States extends invitations to the diplomatic representatives of foreign nations in Washington and that is what was done.

Said McCurry: "To my knowledge we have not invited any foreign leader to attend the inaugural activities."
