Tatarstan: President Addresses Economic Development

Kazan, 20 January 1997 (RFE/RL) - Tatar President Mintimer Shaimiev today addressed the State Council on prospects for further economic and industrial development for the Republic.

Shaimiev's annual message was followed by statements from Renat Kharis, the State Council's deputy chairman, and Robert Minnulin, a writer concerned about a draft law on creating a new order in the Tatar alphabet. The alphabet is currently based on cyrillic, but some have suggested reverting the cyrillic basis of the Tatar alphabet back to Latin, as it was in the 1930s.

Today's council session falls on Shaimiev's 60th birthday and Russian president Boris Yeltsin's chief of staff, Anatoly Chubais sent congratulations today.
