U.S.: Albright Nomination Approved

Washington, 20 January 1997 (RFE/RL) - The Senate Foreign Relations Committee today unanimously recommended that Madeleine Albright be confirmed as the new U.S. secretary of state.

The recommendation was sent to the full 100-member Senate, which is scheduled to vote on Wednesday to approve her appointment.

The committee's decision is the first vote on the new members of U.S. President Bill Clinton's cabinet.

Albright will become the first woman secretary of state in the history of the United States. She succeeds Warren Christopher, who retired after serving in the post in Clinton's first four-year term.
