Russia: Primakov, Talbott Discuss U.S.-Russia Ties




Moscow, 23 January 1997 (RFE/RL) - Russia's Foriegn Minister Yevgney Primakov met with Interim U.S. Secretary of State Strobe Talbott in Moscow today.

The Ministry's spokesman, Gennady Tarasov, told reporters that Primakov and Talbott discussed preparations for next month's session of a joint commission chaired by Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin and U.S. Vice President Al Gore. Tarasov said they also discussed arms control issues and European security.

Talbott, who is accompanied by Gore's advisor, arrived in Moscow yesterday for talks that were expected to concentrate on plans for a summit this spring between Russian President Boris Yeltsin and U.S. President Bill Clinton.

Talbott has been named acting U.S. Secretary of State until Madeleine Albright is sworn in.

Tarasov said Primakov had sent his congratulations to Albright on her confirmation by the U.S. Senate. He said Primakov expects to meet with Albright in the near future.
