Russia: Yeltsin Appears On Television

Moscow, 28 January 1997 (RFE/RL) - Russian President Boris Yeltsin appeared briefly on television tonight during a Kremlin meeting.

Yeltsin appeared animated during talks with Secretary of the Commonwealth of Independent States, Ivan Korotchenya.

The pictures were the first to be shown of Yeltsin since January 6 shortly before he was taken ill with pneumonia.

Yeltsin also met Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin today during his three hour visit to the Kremlin before returing to his country home.

A presidential spokesman told reporters that Yeltsin was in better form than when he first visited the Kremlin after his illness last Wednesday. Aides have said he is not yet ready to return to full-time work.

Yeltsin's political opponents have questioned his ability to govern and have discussed trying to remove him for health reasons.

Fresh concerns over his health were raised yesterday when he canceled a planned trip to the Netherlands on the recommendation of his doctors. But aides today said French president Jacques Chirac will go ahead with a Moscow visit and talks with Yeltsin this Sunday. The Kremlin said also said today that a meeting between Yeltsin and Chinese President Jiang Zemin would go ahead in Moscow in April.
