Albania: Three Opposition Leaders Charged

Tirana, 29 January 1997 (RFE/RL) - Officials of Albania's opposition Socialist party say three main opposition leaders have been charged over their role in recent violent anti-government incidents.

The three are the secretary general of the Socialist (ex-communist) party Rexhep Meidani; Jinushi Skender, leader of the Social Democratic party; and Arben Imami of the Democratic Alliance.

The officials say four local Socialist party leaders have also been detained, including the secretary generals for the towns of Vlore and Berat in the south, and for Peshkopia in the north.

There's no independent confirmation.

A series of violent demonstrations has swept Albania in recent days as protestors vented their anger over the collapse of a number of bogus investment schemes. Public offices, town halls and buildings belonging to the ruling Democratic Party were damaged or destroyed in the rallies. The government today banned all public sports events until the situation in the country returns to normal.
