Croatia: Tudjman Reported Recovered From Stomach Problems

Zagreb, 7 February 1997 (RFE/RL) - Croatia's health minister released a statement today saying that President Franjo Tudjman has recovered from the stomach ailment that caused him to be hospitalized in Washington last November.

Health Minister Andrija Hebrang said in Zagreb that tests by a team of Croatian, French, German and US doctors had shown the 74-year-old president had recovered from what he called an ulcer and swollen lymph glands.

Hebrang's announcement of Tudjman's recovery, which could not be independently verified, was carried by the official Hina news agency.

It was widely reported by the US news media late last year that Tudjman had stomach cancer.

Tudjman said in an interview with CNN last week that reports that he had "irreversible stomach cancer" were "exaggerated."
