Washington, 21 March 1997 (RFE/RL) - State Department spokesman Nicholas Burns says the United States would not favor the annexation by Armenia of Nagorno-Karabakh.
Burns said yesterday the U.S. hopes "very much" that is not the intention of the government of Armenia.
He made the comment when asked about the appointment of Robert Kocharyan, president of the ethnic Armenian community in Nagorno-Karabakh, as Armenia's new prime minister.
Burns said the U.S. would like to see a resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh problem peacefully.
