Kyrgyzstan: Opposition Journalist Arrested

Bishkek, 25 March 1997 (RFE/RL) - Our correspondent in the Kyrgyz capital of Bishkek reports that an opposition journalist was detained by police last night.

Our correspondent says no official charges have been brought against Ryspek Omurzakov, a journalist from the opposition weekly "Res Publica." A Bishkek prosecutor confirmed the arrest but declined to give further information.

Last year Omurzakov received a two-year suspended sentence for allegedly insulting Kyrgyz President Askar Akayev. Amnesty International called him then a prisoner of conscience. Omurzakov's latest arrest comes after he published an article earlier this year criticizing the director of a Bishkek factory.
