Turkmenistan: President Rejects Supra-National CIS Bodies

Ashgabat, 27 March 1997 (RFE/RL) - Turkmenistan's President Saparmurat Niyazov has praised Commonwealth of Independent States development, but rejects the idea of creating CIS supra-national bodies.

Speaking to Itar-Tass yesterday before his departure to the Moscow CIS summit, Niyazov said the CIS displays flexibility and various mechanisms for cooperation. And, he said each member must choose what it believes to be the most valuable and profitable.

Niyazov says he plans to address the CIS summit. He said he believes that giving the CIS a multi-national character would only serve to impede the progress of each of its members.
