Moscow, April 4, 1997 (RFE/RL) - Azerbaijan has urged Russian President Boris Yeltsin to take effective action to recover arms worth at least one billion dollars which were illegally handed over to Armenia.
The Azerbaijani news agency Turan says Azerbaijani President Geidar Aliyev made the appeal to Yeltsin but does n-o-t say when.
Russian troops unofficially armed ethnic Armenian separatists who fought an eight-year war against Azerbaijan over the disputed enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh in Azerbaijan. A ceasefire has been in effect since May 1994.
Last month, Russian Defence Minister Igor Rodionov announced an inquiry into the illegal transfer of 84 Russian T-72 army tanks and 50 infantry fighting vehicles to Armenia in 1994-1996.
