Bulgaria: Record Cold Sweeps Country

Sofia, 8 April 1997 (RFE/RL/) - A cold wave continues to cause problems in Bulgaria, and brings with it the coldest temperatures on record for this time of year. Heavy snowfalls that started the first day of Spring continue, and have forced the closing of mountain passes north of Sofia.

Our Sofia correspondent also reports that experts fear a quick thaw could set off heavy flooding, with many lakes already at dangerous levels. Residents in some areas of the country today were warned to stay home because of lack of public transport and safety concerns.

In addition, high winds have knocked down hundreds of kilometers of electricity tranmission cable across the country, leaving many communities in the dark.
