Tajikistan: U.S. Lifts Travel Warnings

Washington, 17 April 1997 (RFE/RL) - The State Department said yesterday that Tajikistan is again safe for the families of U.S. diplomats and American travelers.

Spokesman Nicholas Burns told reporters the department has lifted an order issued February 20 that required the dependents of U.S. Embassy personnel to leave the capital of Dushanbe. He also said the general advisory warning Americans against travel in Tajikistan has been removed.

Burns said there has been significant improvement in the security situation, in Dushanbe. He said it is safe enough to permit return to Tajikistan of family members of American employees.
