Washington, 9 May 1997 (RFE/RL) - A judge in Washington has set July 21 as the date for sentencing two men convicted for the robbery and murder of a Bulgarian diplomat's son in the U.S. capitol in October 1995.
The victim, Evgeny Mihailov, was shot and fatally wounded the night of October 9, 1995. Police said three men wanted his expensive leather jacket, and, when he refused to give it up, one of the men shot Mihailov. The victim was attacked on the steps of the Bulgarian Embassy. He died in a hospital.
The trial of the three men ended in Washington earlier this week. A jury convicted Gary Washington and Maurice Sykes of murder and attempted robbery. The jury, however, was unable to reach a verdict for Shon Hancock, and he will be retried.
