Albania: Negotiations Continue

Tirana, 21 May 1997 (RFE/RL) Albania's Socialist-led government says that despite progress at talks overnight with President Sali Berisha, no final agreement has been reached on the terms of next month's scheduled general elections.

Earlier reports said Berisha had conceded a key opposition demand and agreed to allow the interim socialist-led government to name the central electoral commission. But the DPA news agency quotes a government spokesman today as saying Berisha's concession only met half of the opposition's demands.

Albania's nine main opposition parties say they will boycott the elections planned for June 29 unless an agreement is reached with Berisha. Negotiations are continuing today.
