Romania: Council Of Europe Launching Children's Aid Project

Prague, 27 May 1997 (RFE/RL) - In Bucharest today, the two highest officials of the Council of Europe announced the start of a Council program of support for Romanian children, especially orphans.

Secretary General Daniel Tarschys and Leni Fischer, president of the organization's Parliamentary Assembly, told reporters that the program would seek to reintegrate socially homeless street children and young people of 18 years of age. They said the program also would aim at reducing the number of children abandoned bv their parents in Romania.

The two Council officials are concluding a three-day visit to Bucharest, where they met with high Romanian officials and attended meetings of Parliamentary Assembly committees being in the capital. The two also met together with Romanian President Emil Constantinescu and Hungarian President Arpad Gonzc, who was on an official visit to the country.
