Bosnia: Official Promises Action On War Crimes

Luxembourg; 2 June 1997 (RFE/RL) - Carlos Westendorp, who will succeed Sweden's Carl Bildt as the new international high representative for Bosnia, said today he wants urgent action against people accused of war crimes in the former Yugoslav republic.

Speaking after meeting European Union foreign ministers in Luxembourg, Westendorp said every effort must be made to bring war criminals to justice. He says new ways and means of producing results must be worked out, but did not give details of just what kind of action is needed.

Westendorp, formerly Spain's Minister for Foreign Affairs, said he is confident that the peace process in Bosnia has become irreversible.

But he said the international community must also end what he called its "Bosnia-fatigue" and bring peace in the Balkans back to the top of the international agenda.
