Bulgaria: Mihailova Encouraged By Visit With Albright On NATO

Washington, 18 June 1997 (RFE/RL) - Bulgarian Foreign Minister Nadezhda Mihailova says she is encouraged about Bulgarian prospects for eventual membership in the NATO alliance.

She told reporters in Washington today that her optimism is based on meetings she had this week with U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and deputy secretary Strobe Talbott. Mihailova said she believes Bulgaria's record of stability and its key position in the Balkans make it a solid choice for future NATO membership.

Mihailova said the Bulgarian government will focus on economic stability, agricultural reform, foreign policy and combatting organized crime and corruption in coming months.
