Albania: Parties Sign Pre-Election Agreement

Rome, 23 June 1997 (RFE/RL) - Albania's main political parties today signed an agreement pledging to ensure that Sunday's parliamentary elections will be free and fair.

The agreement was signed in Rome by Democratic Party Chairman Tritan Shehu, main opposition Socialist Party leader Fatos Nano, and Social Democratic Party leader Skender Ojinushi. The four-point agreement also recognized the need for a coalition government and called for the opposition to occupy key supervisory posts in parliament.

Today's agreement came as Tirana police reported that six officers were shot and wounded patrolling the capital's streets. Nine people were reportedly killed in weekend violence in Albania. More than 1,000 people have been killed since January, when shady investment schemes collapsed and sparked violence across the country.
