The East: Confirmation Hearing For New U.S. Ambassadors Postponed

Washington, 25 June 1997 (RFE/RL) -- The U.S. Senate Foreign Relations committee has postponed a hearing scheduled for today to confirm the appointments of a new U.S. ambassador to Russia and other diplomats.

A committee spokesman says the meeting was postponed because of pressing business on the Senate floor. No new hearing date was scheduled.

The committee still must question the appointees and recommend to the full Senate whether they should be confirmed. The members of the group are: James Collins, named as ambassador to Russia; Marc Grossman, nominated for Assistant Secretary of State for European and Canadian Affairs; John Kornblum, nominated to be ambassador to Germany, and Stephen Sestanovich, nominated to be Special Adviser to the Secretary of State for the countries of the former Soviet Union.
