Belgrade, 25 June 1997 (RFE/RL) - Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic said on a trip to the separatist province of Kosovo today that Belgrade will never give up the majority ethnic Albanian region.
Speaking to a crowd of minority Serbs in Kosovo's capital Pristina, he said there are no pressures under which Serbia will yield even an inch of Kosovo.
Kosovo, where ethnic Albanians outnumber Serbs by nine to one, has been rocked by a wave of secessionist attacks since the beginning of this year. The attacks, which have killed some 30 people, have been aimed at Serb officials and ethnic Albanians cooperating with them.
The majority of Albanians in Kosovo have supported non-violent secession from rump-Yugoslavia since 1989, when Belgrade revoked the province's largely autonomous status within the former Yugoslavia.
