Hungary: Power Plants To Aid Effort To Meet EU Standards

Washington, 27 June 1997 (RFE/RL) - Hungary is planning to construct two new gas turbine power plants in an effort to meet the electric power grid requirements of the European Union and to improve the reliability of electric service throughout the country,

The World Bank has agreed to provide a $60 million loan to help Budapest get the project started quickly. The two plants will generate 220 megawatts of electricity.

In addition, the project will enhance Hungary's role as a transit country for the Central and East European electricity trade.
