Bosnia: U.S. Will Continue To Support Serb President

Washington, 21 August 1997 (RFE/RL) - The United States says it will continue to support Bosnian Serb President Biljana Plavsic in her struggle with hardline supporters of indicted war crimes suspect and former president Radovan Karadzic, so long as Mrs. Plavsic continues to follow what the U.S. calls the path of peace.

State Department spokesman James Rubin also said the situation in Banja Luka, where Plavsic is based, now appears to have settled down after a confrontation between Bosnian Serb police forces loyal to Karadzic and international peacekeeping troops.

Rubin again praised Plavsic yesterday, calling her actions courageous and justified. Rubin says she has supported the Bosnian peace agreement at great personal risk.
