Poland: President Ending Portugal Visit

Lisbon, 4 September 1997 (RFE/RL) - Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski, who is wrapping up an official three-day visit to Portugal, has said he is satisfied with Portugese support for Poland's eventual membership in NATO and the EU.

He told reporters in Lisbon yesterday that Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres had expressed confidence that Poland will soon join Portugal as a member of both organizations. The two met in the northern Portugese city of Porto.

Poland has already been invited by NATO to begin accession talks while the EU is expected to extend a similar invitation later this year.
