Romania/Russia: Treaty Negotiations Resume This Month

Bucharest, 18 September 1997 (RFE/RL) - Negotiations on a Romania Russia treaty are scheduled to resume this month. Sources in Romania's Foreign Ministry tell RFE/RL that a resumption of talks was agreed this month, when Russia's Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin met Romania's President Emil Constantinescu in Vilnius at a conference on regional security.

Among unresolved issues -- as was the case of the recently ratified Romania-Ukraine treaty -- is addressing the 1939 Hitler-Stalin pact, under which some Romanian territory was lost to the former USSR (now, parts of present day Ukraine, Moldova).

Romania-Russia relations is also the focus this week of talks in Moscow between Romania's Parliament Chairman Ion Diaconescu and State Duma Chairman Gennady Seleznyov.
