Russia: U.S. Concerned About Nuclear Aid To Iran

Washington, 8 October 1997 (RFE/RL) - The White House says the United States is concerned about persistent reports that Iran is obtaining sophisticated technology from Russia that could be used to produce nuclear missiles.

Spokesman Michael McCurry told reporters yesterday the U.S. believes the Russian government is aware of Washington's concerns and views on the issue. He says the U.S. has had intensive talks with Russia on the subject.

He says the U.S. has also had intensive talks with Israel on the issue. Israeli intelligence sources were quoted as saying last week that Russia and China are helping Iran design nuclear missiles. The Russian government has dismissed the reports, and Russia's domestic intelligence service said it had thwarted attempts to give Iran the equipment to make nuclear missiles.
