Georgia: Russia Denies Abandoning Radioactive Material


Tbilisi, 23 October 1997 (RFE/RL) - Russia's Defense Ministry today denied that radioactive substances were abandoned at former Soviet military bases in Georgia, according to Caucasus Press news agency.

A ministry spokesman was quoted as saying the cesium containers found on the territory of the former Russian military base in Lilo were a component of laboratory equipment used for measuring radiation levels.

A Georgian Health Ministry official yesterday was quoted by Interfax news agency as saying six of the ten Georgian servicemen, who contracted radation sickness from exposure to the cesium capsules, will be sent to France and Germany for medical treatment.
