Sofia, 29 October 1997 (RFE/RL) - Bulgaria's President Petar Stoyanov yesterday announced that Bulgaria, Macedonia, Albania and Italy will in two weeks sign a memorandum officially launching a major, new transport project. The transport project seeks to link the Adriatic to the Black Sea with a modern highway.
Stoyanov made the announcement yesterday following a meeting in Sofia with Italy's President Oscar Luigi Scalfaro. The presidents said the highway could contribute significantly to economic development in the Balkan region.
Scalfaro praised Bulgaria's reform efforts, and said he supports Sofia's aspirations to join the European Union and NATO.
