Kazakhstan: Gore Says U.S. Has Faith In Reforms

By Merhat Sharipzhan and K.P. Foley

Washington, 18 November 1997 (RFE/RL) - U.S. Vice President Al Gore says the United States has faith in the economic and political reforms in Kazakhstan.

Gore made the remarks earlier yesterday in welcoming Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev to Washington for an official visit.

The two convened the fourth session of the Kazakhstan-U.S. Joint Commission, and Gore said the two countries will sign what he called an action plan for economic development at the conclusion of the commission meetings tomorrow.

Gore says the agreements to be signed will demonstrate to the international business community that the U.S. has confidence in Kazakhstan's progress toward building a free market economy.

The U.S. vice president also says the sides will discuss development of Kazakhstan's energy sector, including Caspian Sea region oil exploration.
