Romania: Turkey's President Visits

Bucharest, 24 November 1997 (RFE/RL) - Turkey's President Suleyman Demirel is on a one-day visit to Bucharest that is expected to focus on economic and political relations with Romania.

Demirel today is scheduled to hold talks with President Emil Constantinescu and to address a joint session of Romania's Parliament. The Presidents have agreed to meet twice a year, alternating between Ankara and Bucharest.

Turkey and Romania are also part of a so-called "trilateral cooperation" group with Bulgaria. Our correspondent reports that Bucharest is Ankara's main commercial partner in the Balkans. Last year, trade between the two countries totaled more than $700 million.
